Social Skills to Remain Clothed at School

Teaching your students the importance of remaining clothed while in public and at school helps them maintain their privacy and respect the privacy of their peers. In this social skills lesson module, use the available PowerPoint presentations and resource materials to teach your students how to remain clothed while at school.

How to Manage Disrobing Behaviors

We’ve all had that experience where we’ve worn a new sweater and realized only after we left the house that it was really itchy or it was actually too warm to wear that day. Once you’re out in public in it, you can’t take it off unless you have something else to put on instead or a t-shirt underneath.

Clothing sensitivities like this can be amplified for students with autism. So, what do we do?

Help your students understand that why we wear clothing when in public spaces, like in school. In the PowerPoint presentation, review the different areas that are considered public spaces, and which are considered private spaces in which it’s appropriate to disrobe.

Sometimes clothing that makes us uncomfortable can be fixed by a teacher or adult. If your student’s socks are bunching up in their shoes and bothering them, encourage them to ask for help. If their shirt gets wet during a classroom activity or recess, they can ask for help drying it out or if there is a spare they can wear while it dries.

The resource materials in this lesson module can help reinforce these ideas and prepare your students to handle clothing challenges as they arise.
