Changes are an expected part of life and are happening around us all the time. Changes can be big, like moving to a new house or starting at a new school, or they can be smaller-scale changes, such as the weather changes, so recess is moved indoors, or there is a substitute teacher at school.
Sometimes we can anticipate changes to our day-to-day routine, but other times, changes can take us by surprise. Preparing our students and children with the social skills to accept changes as they occur can help them grow and develop as they mature into adulthood.
Learning to Accept Change
Learning how to accept change can help your students adjust to new experiences with greater adaptability and resilience. While change can feel scary, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Ask questions – if you don’t understand what is changing, ask a trusted adult for more information.
- Talk about how you feel with someone you trust.
- Practice calming strategies
- Make a plan for how you’ll handle changes in the future
- Focus on the positive that may come from changes
- Give yourself time to adapt – it’s okay if you need time to adjust.
Utilizing the resources in this social skills lesson module can help prepare your students with the knowledge and skills to adapt to and accept changes when they are faced with them!
