The Watson Institute, a special education organization serving students with special needs ages 3 to 21, proudly hosted its 5th Annual Special Kick Clinic this past weekend in partnership with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds soccer team.
More than 130 children with special needs and their siblings took to the field at Highmark Stadium on Sunday to enjoy various soccer stations set up and run by the Riverhounds players. Each participant was paired up with a volunteer who enjoyed lunch with them and their family then helped them through each of the stations set up on the field.
The Special Kick Clinic is designed to be inclusive so all children with special needs can play and enjoy themselves on the field. Family members of participants have expressed how much the Kick Clinic means to their child and their families; LeeAnn Peluso shared, “This was my grandson’s first time at the event. It was well organized, the volunteers were awesome, and the players were engaging! What a great day!”
This event would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, the support of the community, our dedicated and compassionate volunteers, and the partnership of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Highmark Stadium.
“We are grateful to the Riverhounds organization, PJ Dick, CJL Engineering, and our other sponsors for partnering with us to continue offering this unique event to children with special needs and their families,” said Barry W. Bohn, Chief Executive Officer of the Watson Institute.
The Special Kick Clinic would also not be possible without the help of the caring volunteers who dedicated their Sunday afternoon to each of the participants in attendance. This group of volunteers went above and beyond to ensure that each child with special needs at the Kick Clinic had a wonderful experience! Watson extends our appreciation to these individuals.
