Reading Specialist Job (Casual)

The Watson Institute is hiring a Casual Reading Specialist which will work 10 to 15 hours per week. This position will support the WISCA program at all three program locations in Sharpsburg, Bridgeville, and Sewickley, PA; this position will also support students in the Education Center Sewickley school program. This position will work 10 to 15 hours per week following a daytime schedule.

Reading Specialist Job Responsibilities:

  • Select, administer, and interpret current assessment tools for school-age children to accurately identify their needs
  • Report assessment information in IEPs, RRs
  • Implement systematic, differentiated instruction based upon assessed needs of identified learners and IEP goals
  • Complete lesson plans as part of the Wilson Reading system
  • Collect data on IEP goals as well as data related to level system in the Wilson Reading System
  • Communicate progress to classroom teachers, families, and districts
  • Organize and maintain a safe and effective learning environment
  • Utilize appropriate behavior management strategies and techniques
  • Communicate with staff in a positive and professional manner
  • Work effectively within a transdisciplinary educational team
  • Regularly travel between each site (Sewickley, Bridgeville, and Sharpsburg)
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills for Reading Specialist Job: 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to organize and present written and verbal information about students
  • Ability to organize the learning environment of students
  • Ability to work as a transdisciplinary team member
  • Ability to manage students’ behavior
  • Ability to plan and implement student instruction

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree
  • PA teaching certification in Elementary, Secondary, or Special Education
  • Two years teaching experience preferred
  • Reading Specialist certification preferred
  • Training in Wilson Reading preferred
  • Training in DIBELS assessment preferred
  • Most tasks require oral communication, visual and hearing perception, and the ability to get around the classrooms, cafeteria, gym, campus, etc.
  • The essential functions of the job described require the ability to exert moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination or bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, kneeling, crouching, brisk walking, and which may involve lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and material of moderate weight (40 pounds)
  • Current Acts 34, 114, and 151 clearances
