The Watson Institute is hiring a full-time Community Based Instructional Aide at Friendship Academy, a special education school for children with emotional and behavioral disorders located 4 miles east of Pittsburgh, PA.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide support and instruction to students in vocational and community settings. Work directly with students both within the campus program/building as well as directly supporting students in community-based experiences outside of the campus. These may include local businesses, community outings, volunteer organizations, and adult agencies/ transition placements for graduating students
  • Instructional Planning – Under the supervision of Transition Coordinator, prepare and review CBI/CBVE activities; organize materials at a community partnership site, adult agency/ transition placement, and/ or community setting
  • Instructional Management – Under the supervision of Transition Coordinator, manage CBI/CBVE activities; implement review and monitoring procedures, necessary data collection, school meetings, and IEP requirements
  • Organizational Skills – Under the supervision of Transition Coordinator, maintain accurate and prompt data collection participate effectively as a prepared team member
  • Skill Development – Under the supervision of Transition Coordinator, participate actively in the supervisory process; engage in skill development activities
  • Excellent interpersonal and professional interactions with the individuals at community partnership sites, community outings and adult agencies/ transition placements
  • Adhere to safety and health procedures, Dept of Labor Guidelines, CBVE guidelines, IEP requirements, and individual agency regulations
  • Daily travel accompanying students is required to various community partnerships sites, volunteer organizations, community outings and to adult agencies/ transition placements
  • Implement strategies for motivating and managing students (i.e. Student Behavior Management System
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Three years’ experience working with children with disabilities preferred
  • Valid PA Driver’s License and ability to drive students in a van
  • The essential functions of this position require the ability to exert moderate physical effort, including bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, kneeling, crouching, brisk walking, and the ability to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to physically restrain students for their safety and the safety of others
  • Current Act 34, 114 and 151 clearances
