This is an exciting time for Watson.

Since we acquired the Craig Academy program in 2001, we've been looking at ways to better serve students with serious emotional challenges. We've recruited highly-qualified staff and enhanced the educational components of the program. We've created a partnership with the University of Pittsburgh, giving their students the opportunity to learn about education and mental health in a real-life setting.

Fulfilling the Need

When the Watson Institute acquired Craig House in 2001 (and subsequently named the program Craig Academy) one of the problems addressed was the need for a new building. The program's location at 751 North Negley Avenue in Pittsburgh's East End was previously a community center built in the 1950s.

Six organziations that serve children and teens with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have each been awarded $175,000 by the Department of Public Welfare (DPW) to provide enhanced evaluation and treatment services. The Watson Institute was one of those organziations selected.

Serving Teens with Asperger's Disorder and High-Functioning Autism

Through the Psychological Services department, the Watson Institute offers social skills groups designed specifically for teenagers who have been diagnosed with Asperger's Disorder of high-functioning autism.

Senior Moments

In June, 15 Craig Academy students left the Craig Academy building for the last time--as graduates. Family and friends watched as they received their diplomas, ready to move forward into the "real" world.

Lights, Camera, Action

In anticipation of an upcoming media campaign and partnership with WTAE, Watson created an informative DVD about the organization, featuring program footage as well as interviews with staff and parents of Watson students.
